This works brings together my wife's love for Rothko and my childhood obsession with delimiting the sky from the sea, or drawing a barrier between them so that they won't mix. Rothko influence meant that the separated parts are not of the same or similar colors, but rather contrasting colors. In the final design, my tendency to box things took over and I ended up having lighter earth tone engulfing the sky and the sea, but with a neutral zone that the colors are trying to penetrate. Separating different aspects of our lives has been a preoccupation for the progress of humanity. If you compare us to our ancestors of a couple of thousands year ago, we now lead much more regimented lives, differentiated and specialized to ever smaller bits. Thus barriers appear everywhere. This is one barrier strong and dividing everything there is in its universe.
